Adopting a new pet should be an exciting and rewarding experience. But just as all families are different, so are all pets. You need to learn what to consider before you find your new family member.

All pets require their owners’ time. Kirsten Theisen, director of pet care issues, says how much time they have to give is the top thing that they should consider when they want to adopt a pet. “If you adopt an 8-year-old cat, she is not going to need the same amount of care as a 9-week-old-dog,”says Theisen.

Like finding the perfect partner, you want a pet that reflects your interests and activity levels. “Particularly if you want to adopt a dog, consider activity levels in the household,” says Theisen. “If you are a couch potato(老泡在电视机面前的人), or if you are a homebody, look for a pet that matches that activity level.”

Some dogs, like terriers, can be loud and noisy and demand a more active lifestyle and room to be outside. They might not fit as well in apartments as more sedentary pets. The Humane Society of the United States suggests potential owners search for information on the Internet and talk to other pet owners when considering what kind of pet works well with their home environment.

Some unusual pets, like tortoises(乌龟), have long life spans, which means they will probably outlive dogs and cats---and even their human owners. They can also grow to be much larger than they were when they first came to live with you. Owners should accept the fact that they need to continue to provide room for these animals and also prepare for the animals’ futures.

Theisen encourages families with children to adopt a pet. If parents teach children loving pet care, the lessons of responsibility will come naturally to children. All animals require daily care. At the very least, there will be days or weeks when children fail to take care of their new pet and the parents have to step in.
