WorldOceansDayisourplanet’sbiggestcelebrationoftheocean...World Oceans Day is our planet’s biggest celebration of the ocean. World Oceans Day 2012 was a great day for ocean conservation(保护). This year’s theme is “Youth: the Next Wave for Change”.

There has been an increasing amount of interest in celebrating World Oceans Day among zoos, aquariums, museums and schools. We also had a big increase in events on the ground, about 600 events in total(up from 400 in 2011).

These events were held in 55 countries and 42 US states, 180 of which were held in zoos, aquariums, or other science education centers. Many of the 600 events around the world, from Reef Check in Bali to Marino Ballena National Park in Costa Rica, involved young people taking direct action by cleaning beaches. In California, volunteers called on 8, 000 young people to do a huge beach clean. In Los Angeles, more than 5, 000 kids, teachers and volunteers formed a huge kid-designed shark and words “Defend the Sea”. In Malaysia, about 25 companies and 50 students from primary schools took part in activities such as beach clean-ups, an art contest, and a play with science experiments. In Bangladesh(孟加拉国), “run for the ocean” was a world class running event on Cox’s Bazar, one of the most beautiful running courses in Bangladesh.

Each event focused on young people and gave them real suggestions for how they could take action to protect the ocean. In addition to direct action events, many organizations held events in universities, government facilities and businesses. Anywhere people and the ocean came together, World Oceans Day was celebrated.

These are just some examples of the 600 events that were held in 2012 to celebrate our shared world ocean. We’re thrilled with how things went this year and we’re already getting excited for 2013.
