Then they sell the tusks and get thousands of dollars. The buyers use the ivory to make sculptures, jewellery and traditional medicines.

The purpose of recent ivory crushes is to send a message to the poachers and those who buy illegal ivory. Stephanie Wang says, “China’s ivory crush is ‘an important step’.
