Basketball is the only major sport that is completely American in origin. 36        

Dr James A. Naismith was hired by the International Young Men’s Christian Association Training School in 1891 to get seminary students to exercise during the winter.    37   . Dr Naismith selected features of soccer, US football, field hockey, and other sports.
