Getting vaccine (疫苗) shots is a nightmare for many people. But after the medicine is injected into your body, you probably breathe a sigh of relief because you know you're protected.  36

The police department in Jinan, Shandong recently discovered that improperly stored or expired (过期的) vaccines, worth more than 570 million yuan, may have been sold in more than 20 provincial-level regions in China since 2011. All the vaccines involved were produced by licensed companies, but as they were not stored or transported in approved conditions, namely being refrigerated between 2℃ and 8℃, the quality could not be guaranteed. The vaccines were for 25 diseases including poliomyelitis (脊髓灰质炎) and rabies (狂犬病).

But there's no need to panic. "Improperly stored or expired vaccines seldom, if ever, cause a toxic (有毒的) reaction," said the World Health Organization in a notice on March 22.  37

China's approved vaccines are divided into two categories.  38  It includes the HBV vaccine (乙肝疫苗) and the DPT vaccine (百日咳、白喉和破伤风疫苗). Vaccines in the second category are not free and residents can choose whether to take them or not. The vaccines in this case fall under the second category.

39   And for the second category, people should go to qualified organizations to get vaccinated.

Apart from expired vaccines, some also worry that effective vaccines may also result in serious side effects.  40  It's "extremely rare' to get seriously ill after vaccination. The benefits of vaccination are far greater than its risks. Without vaccines there would be more harm and deaths.

A. Therefore, some parents insist their children should get vaccinated in any case.

B. However, these days, some Chinese people are questioning whether they should get vaccinated.

C. The case therefore shouldn't stop parents from getting their children      vaccinated for the first category.

D. The biggest risk is that the vaccines have side effects.

E. In response to this, experts said the most common side effects of vaccines are mild and can go away within a few days.

F. Residents are required to be given the vaccines in the first category free of charge.

G. It added that there was likely to he minimal (最小的) safety risk in this particular case.
