ChopstickshavebecomeacommontoolwithinAsiancultureandwit...

Chopsticks have become a common tool within Asian culture and within restaurants across the world. Although no one knows for sure, chopsticks are thought to be more than 5,000 years old. Appearing first in China, chopsticks began to spread to Korea,Japan and later Vietnam by 500 A.D.

Chopsticks are typically made from bamboo due to the fact that bamboo is easy to split, rather inexpensive to produce, and resistant to heat. However, many other materials have been used to construct chopsticks including pine, bone and sandalwood. Other types of chopsticks have been made from gold, silver and bronze. Ancient bronze chopsticks have been discovered in China, dating back to the Shang Dynasty. Generally, Chinese chopsticks tend to be roughly 25 centimeters long and Japanese ones measure about 18-20 centimeters.

Within the Asian culture, chopstick usage contains a superstitious (迷信的)element. In China, it’s popular among lovers and newly-married couples to give each other chopsticks as a gift. The two sticks need to be the same length and used together, showing the couple’s cooperation and love. Uneven (参差不齐的)chopsticks are a sign of a bad travel experience to come. Those who sit at a table with uneven chopsticks are certain to miss the next boat, plane or train they were supposed to catch. Those who drop their chopsticks to the floor will have bad luck in the near future.

The way you handle your chopsticks can say a lot about you, depending on what country you’re in. Chopsticks should be held at the middle in China. Holding them at top signals feeling superior and holding them at bottom is “the way of beggars”. In many Asian cultures, it’s considered rude to allow your chopsticks to stand straight in a bowl of rice. Chopsticks should not be used to root around in the bottom of your bowl for food.
